As part of our ongoing work with the Autism Alliance UK, we are pleased to share their About Autism information sheet, developed to help address misinformation and improve understanding of autism across society.
The resource brings together key facts and evidence about autism, placing strong emphasis on the role that language plays in shaping attitudes and experiences. The Autism Alliance UK highlights how negative or deficit-based language has contributed to poorer outcomes for autistic people in areas such as health, education and employment, and calls for a sustained shift in how autism is understood and discussed.
It is important that autistic people are seen as individuals first, people with strengths, needs, talents and aspirations, and that their experiences are not reduced to labels or stereotypes.
By sharing this resource, we support the Autism Alliance UK’s commitment to promoting understanding that is led by autistic voices and grounded in evidence, respect and empathy.
