“I didn’t realise how good it would be to live here. I’ve learnt so much and I’m still learning,” he says. “I’m doing my own cooking and cleaning and going out to do things I’ve never done before.”
Jake enjoys cooking meals from scratch and takes pride in looking after his home. His staff team support him in a way that works for him, they’ve got to know his routines and encourage him to keep trying new things.
Outside the house, Jake’s been busy. He recently completed a 2km Swimathon, raising over £500 for Cancer Research. “I’m proud of myself for doing that,” he says.
Jake is a keen footballer. He plays for the Charlton disability football team and has volunteered in schools, coaching children in PE lessons.
More recently, Jake has discovered a passion for sailing. He now volunteers at a local sailing club, supporting children who are learning to sail.
“The kids don’t always listen and could fall in, so I have to keep my eye on them,” he says. “I’m never late, I always work hard. I’m smashing it!”
Looking ahead, Jake’s staff team are supporting him to explore IT courses, building on his love of technology. He’s also planning to apply to join EveryStory’s recruitment panel and become a Quality Checker, helping to choose the right staff and ensure people get the best support possible.
“We can all achieve stuff if we get the right support and opportunities.”
