Catherine’s Story
Catherine, who is visually impaired, is a creative and independent individual who makes and sells jewelry, serves on recruitment panels, and actively pursues personal growth.

Catherine is warm, thoughtful, and creative. She enjoys arts and crafts, going to the theatre, listening to music, and has recently discovered a passion for making jewellery. Knowing how creative she is, staff introduced Catherine to beading. She began designing and crafting her own pieces. With support to adapt the process around her visual impairment, she now makes jewellery for others and even sold some at a recent art exhibition.
Catherine is visually impaired and uses a range of adaptations in her home to stay independent, such as a talking microwave and one-touch kettle. Her support team has received specialist training to work with her in a way that suits her needs. Catherine also keeps connected with friends through RNIB and attends annual technology workshops focused on visual impairments.
One of the things Catherine is most proud of is her role on Everystory’s recruitment panel. Catherine helps interview new staff, making sure the people we employ are the right fit for our services. She received accessible training and uses adapted materials to be fully involved in asking questions and giving feedback. Catherine chooses her own questions and plays a key part in making recruitment decisions. She’s such a valued member of the panel that she now supports interviews for other local multidisciplinary teams too.
“I like meeting new people and being part of choosing the right staff,” she says. “It feels good to be involved.”
Catherine’s goal is to live more independently one day. She’s working on skills like cooking, budgeting, travel training, and using technology with greater confidence- and we’re right beside her every step of the way.
